Well, I know it's been a while, but I'm still alive and breathing. It was a very busy weekend.
Friday I worked all day then went to Mike's football game. Da Bears lost unfortunately. Then he had a bonfire afterward to celebrate his 17th birthday. It really is quite hard to believe he is 17 already. Where has time gone???
Saturday morning, we just kinda chilled around the Oley house and hung out. Ike got some cash for his birthday and was burning a hole in his pocket in no time, so we went to Cabela's and took care of that problem. Yes, I love the store so much, I really don't mind going there on days off!
Mom and Dale are in town this week for Julie's (Dale's daughter's) big wedding day on Saturday! Can't believe that is here already, I can't believe it's October already! So we went to dinner with Grandma Hibbs and Dale's brothers to Cracker Barrel on Saturday. I worked Sunday, but a pleasant surprise when Mom, Mike, Jessie, and Taylor appeared in the vastness of the camo at work! Went went to the new LaFiesta restaurant in Dundee for lunch and I came home and we had dinner and hung out here.
Today was a very interesting day, which is the main reason for this blog post....can I get your opinion please?
After my last class, I stopped at the gas station about a block or two from campus to pick up some gum and across the parking lot was a black lady in a long wool trench coat and nice pants walking toward me waving her arms. She looked very decent. As she got closer, I could tell she was a little rougher than she appeared from a distance. I rolled down my window and she said, "Can you please do me a favor?" I told her it depended on what it was. She replied: "My van broke down a couple blocks away, and I need to pick my people up at the airport, which is why I'm dressed this way. Could you please give me a ride to the airport and a couple dollars for gas if I pay you back?"
I was taken off guard. Ok, have you been faced with a situation like this? I didn't know what to do. What if she was legitimate? What if she was a professional pan handler who would take me for all I have if I let her in my car? And the ultimate question: What would Jesus do? I had to think about this all in a couple seconds. It's so sad we live in a world where we are scared to help people?
I politely told her no. She asked again and I said "No, I'm sorry." I rolled up my window and drove away to the next gas station. But, again, what a dilemma. I just had to go with my gut on this one, but should I have went with my heart and done it? I go right by the airport, I could've at least given her a ride. But, even as I type this, I realize that would've been a stupid thing to do. Let a strange woman in my car and take her alone to the airport. So, please let me know how you would've handled the situation....
Busy week this week. Work tomorrow and a cook-out at a friend's house (Sue Fisk for those of you who know her!). It's a get together with all of mom's friends while she's in town. Wednesday, an accounting test. Thursday, work 2-10, same Friday. Wedding Saturday and work 9-5 Sunday. Whewwww.....!!

Wasting time...
I am sitting here outside my class waiting for my professor who obviously has a hard time getting out of bed because he is always late. Anyways, this morning's drive was annoying because traffic was thick and going about 60, so people were riding my bumper and "coming to visit" as Jess says. So I get over and they speed past me at 85 only to slam on their brakes a second later and not get two feet further! Not my fault your butt can't get out of bed early enough to get to work on time! Stupid people!
Anyways, feels like today is going to be a good day! Hope yours is the same!!

Wheww
Update: Ryan left at 4, and I managed to avoid him enough today to not do that all-store page :)
Ahhh...kinda scared!
I am sitting in my car on my lunch right now...kinda bored. But I have been giving Ryan crap all morning about a couple thing (but he started it by constantly teasing me and telling everybody in our department about my DNR ticket). We constantly try to flip pens out of each other's pocket. And, well, when I tried to get him this morning, I hit his jaw and he bit his tongue! Oops...haha! Now he is making me do a page over the PA this afternoon as part of my "training." If you ask me, it's initiation! I DON'T WANNA!!!

Miscellaneous Stuff....
Pop Quiz for people who used to live in Monroe. Can you guess what the following pictures are:

"49/50 A+ Great Work" from my Communications test

Today was a good day! I got the highest score and an A+ (which I never heard of those in college before) on my Business Communications class before! That would go on the fridge, but I need it to study for my next test!
"49/50 A+ Great Work" from my Communications testIn my Law class, we had to write a paper describing our roles in life and who our stakeholders are, as well as the definition of a business professional. This was 2 weeks ago, and this is my favorite class. She put the papers on the front table and said that if our paper was in that pile, we got full credit. If not, we needed to see her. While I was waiting to find my paper in the pile, she said she would just call off the names of the people she needed to see. Well, she called off a few names, then (hold your breath) she said "Mark Cochran." Ohhhhh boy, my heart was racing and I was nerved up, feeling about two inches tall.
I waited for her to get done telling the guy in front of me what she really wanted to read in the papers and what he left out, blah blah blah. Then I approched her and told her my name. She looked through the papers, pulled mine out, and looked at it. She replied, "Ah, yes. I just really wanted to meet you. Yours was one of the best papers I've gotten in a long time, from a very neat perspective. I just wanted to meet the person who wrote this." WOW! What a relief and a surprise. I was so shocked, I said thank you and shook her hand and walked away.

"Great Perspective" from my Law paper
How cool was that! That has been my favorite class all semester, she's an awesome professor who is very engaging and interesting to hear teach and talk. She is a corporate lawyer who knows her stuff. I really want to find out what other classes I need that she teaches!
So, all in all, not a bad day! Now, I need to go and print off some homework and watch the season premiere of "Two and a Half Men!"

The answer to the pop quiz: That is the site of the former Wickes Lumber property and several houses. Soon to be the Super Wal-Mart. Demo started two weeks ago and now all of the buildings are gone. The existing Wal-Mart is going to be turned into a Hobby Lobby about a month after Super Wal-Mart opens in September, 2009.

Youth Hunt- Day 2
Ike and I took Caz (Tyler) out again and Brock, who is 10. His dad has a sweet hook-up spot on a lake in Hillsdale we'd like to try to hunt opening day, so we thought if we take Brock, he'd return the favor and let us hunt there. Tyler had an awesome double. Two ducks came in, he shot twice, got 2 birds! Nothing could've made that more perfect. Altogether, 9 flew in the marsh and left in a boat!
Alright, a little refreshed!
Well, I did get some sleep last night, even though I am still dead tired! I am so sore I can barely make it up and down stairs! Like I mentioned, the hunting was fun as always, a good time. But, it was getting to and from the sweet spot that was a pain. The water was low in the pot hole, so it was all mud (not what it looked like when me and Mike scouted it out two weeks ago and decided on it). I was wearing my waders and you buy them normally about a size larger for heavy socks in the late season. Well, it was 80 degrees yesterday and I wore dress socks under, so they were thin and could breathe.
Like I mentioned, it was all mud. It came up to my knees, and I had to trudge through about 60 yards of this. I was really, really hard work and I'm feeling it today!
Anyways, I feel like this blog is all about ME, ME, ME and I don't get to hear a whole lot about YOU, YOU, YOU. So this is me asking to let me know how you are doing. Leave me a comment with a "blog" about what's going on in your life!

It was like Christmas morn....
I'm probably gonna make this short. I went to sleep last night around 12:30 and woke up at 2:45 and have been up ever since. This morning was the first day of the youth waterfowl hunt here in Michigan. Mike and I took 2 youths (Caz and RyBoo). No, that's not their real names, they are Tyler and Ryan. Tyler has never been duck hunting and shot his first ducks today. He got the first one. It was like watching kids on Christmas when the shooting started! Even though Ike and I couldn't hunt, we had just as much fun leading these guys on a hunt!
FYI: The youth hunt is a special open waterfowl weekend for youths 15 and under. Mike and I took them to a new sweet spot we found and it paid off. Between the two of them, they brought 7 ducks home (2 mallards and 4 green-wing teal). But they also shot a Canadian goose, another mallard, and a wood duck that got lost in the weeds and we couldn't find.
It was a very fun day even though we were all running on just short of 3 hours sleep (and I still haven't gotten any shut-eye!). We came back in around 10 and went to the Point Mouilee Waterfowl Festival. Then the young'ns went home and slept and Mike and I went to Cabela's.
Here's some pics:

Is this really a job???
Thank God, it looks like the training is almost over for Cabela's. I spent the afternoon yesterday and all day today on the floor in the Camo Department actually getting to help customers. I mean, is it real that I'm getting paid to do this. Here's what my day consisted of:
1. Talked to some guy about a mule deer hunt he's going on in Montana in November.
2. "Straighten" the waterfowl section in our department. By "straighten" I mean sort through the waterfowl racks and look at the stuff that I really want. Found a coat I really need to buy. I don't have one and have been borrowing one of Ike's that's not waterproof.
3. Talk to some guy about how he's taking his little brother on his first youth waterfowl hunt this weekend and how I'm taking some kids too (at least it looks that way tonight....).
4. Helped this lady pick out a whole outfit for her first November deer hunt coming up.
That was just today. I mean, come on, getting paid to walk through Cabela's and learn about new hunting stuff that really could help me in the marsh or field. Most people pay money to go to seminars to learn about this kind of stuff. JP (my mentor and lead) is really cool, he doesn't waterfowl hunt and wants to pick my brain. Says he's impressed with my interactions with customers.
I mean, when I worked retail at the Gap, it was so stupid; I hated it! But here, I'm selling stuff I like, helping people with their hobby that also happens to be mine, and sit there and have conversations about hunting adventures. It's like a big toy store for grown-ups!!! Hopefully this excitement will remain....

Duck, Duck, NO GOOSE!
Well, even thought it really sucked to get the soaking rains and cancel the Saturday hunt, I was able to get my homework done for the weekend. Good thing...
Sunday we were in the marsh at 5:00 in the morning. We got out there, the deeks (decoys) were set by 6:00 and we were in the blind by 6:15 just in time for 6:27 shooting time. Didn't see a whole bunch for about an hour. The sun was coming up and the sky was pink....sailors take warning, storms were coming. We watched all kinds of ducks crash into the pot hole (areas of water off the main water) that we're looking at going for the youth hunt this weekend. Hundreds of ducks, and that said, we would have limited out in ducks had it been duck season and done for the day by 10! But, it was goose season only that was open.
After a while, two geese flew by, too far to shoot. Two more followed close behind within shooting distance, Ike was calling and I was watching to see what he would do. They started hooking back like they would land in, so we didn't shoot. Well, they didn't (opportunity #1, missed). A while later, we hadn't seen anything, so we figured we'd walk over and empty the boat out (it was in the next pot hole hidden). We took our guns of course in case anything came by. We heard something flying behind, but it didn't sound like a goose. We turned around and sure enough, it was a single (one goose). Ike shot 3 times, and I opened fire once and we missed (maybe hit it in the but). They say the best decoy is a man out of his blind! Haha, not funny!! Ike said he's gonna create a decoy of a man that looks like he's giving up and packing in, because that always seems when they come in.
Nothing came and we went in at about 11 for a short break until about 1. We went back out further back in the marsh and watched the storms come in. For about 2 hours, it downpoured and we got soaked, nothing was flying. You get used to being wet after a while! We stayed out til shooting time (7:26) and packed up. By the time we got to shore, a flock of about 20-30 flew right over where we were! Go figure!
So, not a good day Sunday. To make it worse, my aunt called me and told me last night that her son's fiance's (Natalie) brother was found dead at their cabin in Oklahoma. He was only 31, so please keep her family in your prayers. Preliminaries show a possible aneurism or a heart attach. Sad news.
Today it was so hard to get out of bed. I went to class and ended the day with practically no homework. It's going to be a busy week, so good thing. I went over my Aunt Janet and Uncle Grant's to find out how Natalie was doing and came home and worked on homework. I just finished it. I work 3 whole days this week and one more day of only 3 of my classes. Saturday (and possibly Sunday), Mike and I are taking 2 kids we both know from JMS and guiding them on the special youth hunt this weekend, where it's open season for kids 15 and under on ducks and geese. Should be fun, even though neither of us can have a gun.
That's the update on the hunt this weekend and my day today. Don't know how much more I'll write this week since I'll be busy...

BREAKING NEWS:

It's a rainy, crappy day here in Southeast Michigan. The pics above are out on the deck and out the front door. It might not look so bad, but it's raining pretty hard and heavy.
What does this mean? No goose hunting. Normally, rain wouldn't be such a bad thing, but when it's raining this hard, it's #1, no fun and #2, the geese don't even like it. This really sucks because I've been looking forward to it all week and early season is over Monday. Good for geese, crappy for me.
What else does this mean? Homework & studying..... Eastern plays Toledo today (not televised), hopefully since we're back in our own conference, the win won't be so daunting. For the record, we're 1-1 with a win against Indiana State and the, uhhhhhh, loss to Michigan State.
A different week
Well, this certainly has been a most busy week. My uncle went into the hospital on Monday because he had a TIA (which is medical speak for a mini-stroke). He got out Thursday, and everything seems to be okay pending some blood work coming back to find out the exact cause of the stroke. So, I spent some time at the hospital this week visiting and keeping company because we all know how boring it can be sitting in a hospital room.
On top of this and college, I started my job at Cabela's this week. It's been very boring. I started Tuesday with an all day training session, and some more on Thursday night, and then more all day yesterday. It's a long-drawn out training process they have. It'll be another week before I'll be on the floor by myself. I work a lot this week too, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday all day.
Last night I got a chance to check out some Jefferson football. Mike was the starting quarterback for the first time in his varsity career (and he's a junior). He ended up running two touchdowns and passing for one touchdown. Very good game, they beat Huron 40-20.
Today I'll get my first chance at hitting the marsh and hunting geese this year. I'm typing this quick blog to update then getting the tote and going. It's a rainy, cloudy day here, so it should be a good evening to get some flocks in the air.
Nothing too interesting to post about, just a busy, busy week. It was nice to sleep in so long this morning and not feel rushed to do anything. After being so bored the entire month of August, now things are really picking up and it's kinda crazy. Keeps me hopping and keeps life interesting though.
Okay, time to go!!! I'll post how I did later.

In Memory 9/11

What a somber day this turns out to be each and every year for the past seven years. Ya know, I understand and have been through the grieving process at times in my life, and this day apparently turns out to be no different. Sooner or later I envision, this day will turn into just another date on the calendar, but that's not going to happen any time soon in our society. As the day approaches, you think to yourself, "Tomorrow is 9-11," and you give it a first or second thought. When the day actually gets here, it's not the same glancing thought.
Every year on 9/11, I'm taken back to where I was and the countless thoughts and reactions I had throughout the days and weeks that followed. It was my senior year at Monroe High School, I was in SRT getting ready to head to my 3rd hour senior English class. I was set to start my co-op position at Monroe City Hall that day after my 3rd hour class. Ms. Cyr, one of our assistant principals, came over the P.A. and asked teachers to turn their TVs on in the classroom, as history is unfolding in New York City. Mrs. Evans turned the monitor on and we saw one of the towers billowing smoke and then within minutes, the second tower was hit. We thought it was a replay of video, but it was live. We then heard many rumors from news reports, that the White House had been hit, the Capitol building was hit, New York was under siege. It was scary to say the least. We were released to our next class and we watched the TV the entire class period. After that class, I was walking down the A-wing stairs and one of my friends grabbed my arm and said, "You're going to war." That was perhaps the worst thing I remember that day, thinking I was going to be drafted or have to go fight in a war. I was only 17, not old enough for the draft. Still, shocking....
I left school around 11:30 that day to go home and get ready for work. Mom was home on her lunch and told me I should call and see if City Hall would remain open. I did, they were, so I got dressed and left. I sat at the switchboard the entire day watching the internet and updated. The Social Security Office on the third floor was evacuated and sent home. I can't remember for sure, but I think the County building closed, except essential personnel. We stayed. Didn't do much work that afternoon, just watched our computer monitors and listened to the radio.
That night, I remember every channel on TV had suspended programming and either had CNN coverage on, or a graphic on the screen instructing viewers to pray. Mom and I went with Aunt Janet to Trinity Church to donate blood, but they were overloaded and closed. We just went home and were glued to the television. Moved beyond measure. I can't imagine being in the shoes of the people who were inside those buildings or on board those airplanes as they knew their fates would soon unfold. Eerie, scary, unbelievable. Not something easy to think about, sitting at your desk and seeing an airliner streaming toward your office. Just a thought that's awful to have, but unable to purge from your mind.
So, here it is, 2008 and seven years later. I woke up about 8, with the fact that it was September 11th on the forefront of my mind, first thing. I flipped on the TV and they were covering the dedication of the memorial at the Pentagon. I was glued to the TV once more, flipping through all the news channels to watch what coverage they had. At about 8:40, MSNBC started replaying the coverage to the minute of the Today Show's coverage in 2001. I haven't turned the TV off yet. I've been watching it as if it were 2001 all over again. I remember it as if it were yesterday, so why do I feel so drawn to watching the commercial free coverage all over again? I really don't know, I was there the first time it happened, why would I want to go through it again. Re-living history I suppose keeps us in remembrance and on guard. The emotions are as if it's happening all over again, but scary to think if something of this magnitude would ever be forgotten or the scale of it would be shrinking.
Knowing now what we didn't know then is what makes it different. Interesting to hear all of the facts as they were coming through unconfirmed and all of the speculation. First reports were that a commuter plan slammed the first tower; now we know it was a 747. A lone suicide mission was first thought; now we know it was a large-scale, carefully planned terrorist attack. How different it was in the moments on 9/11/01, all the unknowns that are now clearly known. First reports were a bomb went off at the Pentagon; yet, it was another suicide airliner. (Sidenote: Katie Couric just said on TV a car bomb went off outside the State Department- just another rumor I referred to earlier).
Who knew seven years ago that our country would be in the shape it is today? Gas not only over two dollars a gallon, not only over three dollars a gallon, but once again approaching the four dollar a gallon mark. There is still no memorial in New York City. A country no longer at war to find bin Laden, but battling in Iraq. I'm still not sure what, if any, connection there was that turned it from a war on terror to a "liberation for the people of Iraq." Today, you can't approach the gates at the airport to say good-bye. There is the Patriot Act, an economy that is just bushwhacked (excuse the pun there), sky rocketing prices for gas and groceries, and countless other policies that affect our every day lives in ways we wouldn't have thought on September 10th.
I walked out a few minutes ago and got my books out of my car. It's another beautiful, sunny September 11, just as it was 7 years ago. Could or will it happen again? I'm sure of it. When will it happen? I have no clue. Things are much different, life has changed so much in the past 7 years. It would be nice if the economy and political scene were as they were on September 10, 2001. But we must accept the fact that will never happen again, sadly. Our world was forever changed on September 11, 2001.

It has been a couple days since I blogged. It has been a very busy couple days. However, it all falls in pale comparison to the facts surrounding this day. I'll update tomorrow.

Just have to vent!
Ok, I'm on my lunch break at school and in the computer lab. Everyone has their ear buds in listening to their iPods, including me. But, the irritation comes when I keep hearing "Shorty had them apple bottom jeans, boots with the fur..." playing over and over because they can't hear their cell phone going off over and over because their headphones are too loud! Sorry, everyone can't be as perfect as me can they?! Hahaha, have a good day!!

Trying to get some studying done, but.........
I admit it....
Thanks for the "drugs" mom!!
I had a "drug" problem when I was a young person and teenager.
I was "drug" to church on Sunday morning -
I was "drug" to church on Sunday night -
I was "drug" to church on Wednesday night -
I was "drug" to Sunday School every week -
I was "drug" to Vacation Bible School -
I was "drug" to the family altar to read the bible and pray.
I was also "drug" to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents.
Those "drugs" are still in my veins; and they affect my behavior
in every thing I do, say, and think. They are stronger than cocaine,
crack or heroin.
If our children had this "drug" problem, America would certainly
be a better place.

Friday Night Dinner
What a performance
Last night, Mike, Jessie, & I loaded up and headed to the DTE Energy Theater to see Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith in concert. For those of you who might not know it, SCC lost his 5 year old daughter in a tragic accident in May. Last night, it was incredible to see such a broken man not only lead us in worship, but perform songs that were inspired majorly in part by his daughter. He was a plain and simple man, just like the rest of us, with a faith in God that even though it was shaken and stressed, still knows the promises of our God. I'm not sure I would be able to muster up the strength to perform for such a crowd only months after my child went to heaven. He opened with a song that Matt Redman sang at his daughter's funeral (Blessed Be Your Name-- look up the lyrics and listen) and spent much time talking about the experiences over the past months. It was a rainy night last night, he mentioned it has rained for his past five performances and related that to the symbolism to this rainy period in his life. But ended with the message that God reigns...notice the "eig" and not the "ai." He talked about the difficulty in determining whether he would ever sing his songs and perform again after his loss. Thank God SCC will continue. He wasn't asking for sympathy and a pity party, but appeared just as a man of God who has gone through great loss with his family, but has such strong faith in God. Neat too, was his song Caleb was playing guitar with his band. I knew this from watching interviews, that both of his sons (Will Franklin and Caleb) were now touring with him. Will Franklin is back in school, so he wasn't there. But very cool to see his son following in such amazing footsteps.

Michael W. Smith was also very good. Although it was easier to connect and be taken in by SCC, Smitty sang a lot of songs off his new record, and more or less, led us in worship. He's so passionate and energetic, it was nice to be able to not just look at him as some sort of celebrity on stage as with most concerts I've been to, but as another man of God, just like me, made to glorify Him. It was kinda more like being at church than being at a concert, but nonetheless, it was a great experience!

Our seats were great, 7th row from the stage on the right. Don't ask me how we got that lucky to get such greats seats, but we did. Directly in front of us was the lady doing sign language for the deaf. Now, I found it kinda ironic that a deaf person would go to a concert, but I began to understand it more and more through the night. At first I thought it would be a big distraction, but it was so neat to watch her use her hands to get across music, no words, no music. But, she used her body language, facial expressions, and expression of her hands to get the point of the music across and it was really, actually beautiful to see. I wondered through the night if she is with the tour or brought in locally. She knew all of the songs because she kept up, and just seemed to be trying to worship along with everyone else. I wanted to go talk to her at intermission, but believe it or not, I was chicken!
Today's gonna be a day for homework and getting that knocked out. Not all of it probably. I'll spread it throughout the weekend, but at least that freakin accounting I want to get done!

After a long day.....
Well, I officially survived day one at EMU. It wasn't a bad day, but it was long. My communications class that I have right after lunch is pretty cool, the professor is good. But my accounting class that I have last is probably going to be my toughest if the professor continues on like he did today. He's a mix of Mr. Dewey from "Saved By The Bell" and Donald Trump. He went through some stuff in like 5 minutes then assigned the homework on it. But, he doesn't grade homework on right/wrong answers, just that we showed work and did it. That's cool, but I'll need to make sure I know how to do it on the exams.
I left campus and Ypsilanti was covered in black clouds. The skies were going up open up and pour anytime. I should've taken a picture to post on here. Well, it did. But, thankfully it was after I got to my car. All in all, not that bad of a day, and I have the confidence I'll survive this semester. Tomorrow though, I'm sleeping in! Next week will be busy. I will have class Monday, start Cabelas Tuesday, class Wednesday, and I'm guessing Cabelas the rest of the week. Makes me even more tired thinking about it!
We're going to see Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith tomorrow at DTE Music Theater. Something to look forward to!!

College...day half
Well, half of my first day of college is over. I had two classes this morning: Intro to Business and Business Law. The first one sucked. I had to get up in front of everyone and introduce myself, and the professor is pretty weird. I can see Saturday Night Live making fun of him! My law class seems kind of interesting and the professor is pretty cool...not what I expected. Not a lot of homework so far, just reading a chapter and writing one paper. My law class got over a half hour early (my professor had to do a radio interview for WWJ), so my lunch break is pretty long today. I went over to the student center and got one of those college "must have" stickers for my windshield and a KFC sandwich. It's so cool being here on campus. I'm surrounded by all kinds of people my age, and hearing people just having conversations that I would rather not waste my time with! Oh well, here we go! Class at 1....

The normality of Fall is here
Day 1
Ok, well it seems like blogs are a popular thing. Now I'm kinda feeling like I'm behind on the times because I don't have one. So, here I'll post some crazy notes and blogs about making my way through the maze of grace set before me. Check back often, I'll try to post new things pretty often!
